- Collaborative Knowledge Management (cKM) system is designed
to facilitate
storage, organization and sharing of the organizational information in a visial way (as
flow charts, diagrams and business maps) and in a collaborative
environment. The tool allows a team of employees to create interactive flow charts,
mind maps and diagrams visualizing concepts, processes and
procedures. The system has Second Life and web-based interfaces. Both are completely
compatible. While the Second Life interface is best suited for synchronous
collaborative work, web-based interface might be more suitable for
individuals wishing to quickly review information and, perhaps, make minor updates.
You can (and, probably should) use both interfaces, depending on a specific task at hand.
Each interface has very similar capabilities and functions independently.
- The system supports two user groups:
- Administrators -- can create and edit charts; and
- Regular Users -- can only review the charts / data, cannot change anything
Administrators can be granted additional privileges, such as ability to
manage system users, or lock / unlock the charts.
- the graphical interface allows administrators to
select containers of different shapes, place containers on the board,
change containers' size and color, set and change titles,
move containers around, link and unlink them, manage and review
containers' contents, delete containers. Regular users can only review the chart and contents
of the containers.
- each container in the chart can include
several types of content:
- Text - you can place unlimited number of text notes in the container. In the Second Life,
you do it by placing notecards in the container, on the web - by filling out
a web form.
Text of the notecards placed in the containers in Second Life can be reviewed
via the web interface, and web notes created via the web interface can be reviewed
(but not changed) in Second Life.
- Web Links - web links connecting cKM visuals with additional information
located on different web pages )including
audio, video, images and text), can be added to containers both in Second
Life and using web interface. Links entered in Second Life
can be viewed and manipulated via web interface and vice a versa.
- Landmarks - landmarks leading a user to a place in Second Life
with more relevant information - a model, simulation, perhaps a video
or audio, can be placed in the chart containers in Second Life. When user is
accessing this chart on the web, landmark is turned into SLURL -
a link that allows user to log into the Second Life and teleport to
specified location.
- Other Flow Charts - cKM utilizes drill-down approach by allowing you
to add a relevant flow-chart as content of a container. You can do it
both via the web interface (by selecting another flow chart from drop-down menu),
and via the Second Life by placing other flow chart from your inventory into
container. If you add flow chart in Second Life it will appear on the
web interface automatically. If you add another flow chart using web interface,
users reviewing contents in Second Life will not see it until you also
drop the actual chart into the container in Second Life.
In Second Life you can place other relevant objects into the containers, however
these objects will be accessible only in Second Life and not via web interface.
- You can create unlimited number of
different charts. There is no limit on the
number of users. You can have multiple copies of the same chart in Second Life
as well.
- In the Second Life, a group of users can
work with a chart synchronously - discussing the subject and creating / changing chart
and its contents at the same time. The charts in Second Life can also be used by
individuals for creating contents or as a learning tool.
The web interface by its nature is used for asynchronous work - authorized users
can access interface individually on their computer to create, review or edit contents.
The system employs locking / unlocking mechanism that allows only one team (group of users)
edit the chart at the same time - it can be either a group of people in Second
Life or individual user on the web. While the chart is being edited by
one group or individual, others can view the chart but cannot make any changes.
